Professional rules

Lawyers in Portugal follow the Statute of the Portuguese Bar Association (Estatuto da Ordem dos Advogados, Law 145/2015, as amended) and the Bar’s regulations. These rules cover independence, professional secrecy, conflicts of interest, fees and advertising, among other duties.

You can read the Statute of the Bar Association and the Bar’s regulations at portal.oa.pt.

What the information on this site is

The information on this site is general in nature and does not constitute legal advice. It explains how Portuguese immigration and nationality law works, not what you should do in your case.

The law, official fees and processing times change, and every case has its own facts. Before you act, ask for advice on your own situation.

Where we describe past work in numbers, such as clients represented or cases filed in court, those numbers describe what has been done. Each case is unique. Past results do not guarantee future outcomes.

When you become a client

Sending the form, an email or a WhatsApp message does not create a lawyer–client relationship. It begins only when we both agree on the work to be done and on the fees, which are set at the consultation, before any work starts.

Until then we are not acting for you, and any deadline in your case keeps running.

What you tell us is confidential from your first message. See “Professional secrecy” in the Privacy policy.

If something goes wrong

If you are unhappy with our work, tell us first. Most problems can be solved directly.

You can also contact the Portuguese Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados), which supervises the professional conduct of lawyers and can give an opinion on fees. Its contacts are at portal.oa.pt.

Alternative resolution of consumer disputes

If you are a consumer and we have a dispute about the service provided, you may turn to an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) entity. For disputes up to €5,000 you may opt for mandatory arbitration or mediation (Article 14 of Law 24/96, as amended by Law 63/2019).

For contracts concluded in Lisbon, the competent entity is the Centro de Arbitragem de Conflitos de Consumo de Lisboa (CACCL), www.centroarbitragemlisboa.pt. The full list of ADR entities is on the Consumer Portal, www.consumidor.gov.pt. We have not joined any ADR entity by agreement.
